Fire Chief

John Staley is veteran of 42 years with the Fire Service. Chief Staley began his career in 1976 in Quincy, Illinois. He then served with the Billings, Montana Fire Department for 26 years resigning with the rank of interim fire chief to accept the Fire Chief position with Thornton, Colorado. After service with Thornton, Chief Staley accepted the position of Fire Chief with Lockwood Fire District 8. Chief Staley has been a life safety consultant to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), co-authored three National Fire Academy courses for Fire Chief Leadership. Chief Staley has held numerous positions within the fire service as part of several organizations supporting the fire and emergency medical services (EMS) delivery. Chief Staley is past chairman of the Metro Denver Fire Chiefs, Secretary for the Colorado Fire Chiefs Association, Vice Chairman of the NFPA Education Section, co-founder of the David Sloan Burn Foundation, the Thornton Fire Foundation and past chairman of the Big Sky Critical Incident Stress Management Team.

Chief Staley’s vision for Lockwood Fire District is to assist the department in preparing for growth by developing a succession planning model to train Lockwood Fire/EMS employees to become managers and supervisors. It is also his intention to create a strategic model that will be used by the organization and the Lockwood Board to outline plans for both operational and financial growth as the District increases.

Chief Staley believes in mutual aid programs that utilize neighboring departments, agencies and organizations assist Lockwood in its service delivery as well as assisting those same neighbors with their services. We intend to be the type of emergency service that everyone wants to come help in their time of need or whenever we are requested.

Finally Chief Staley believes the strength of every public safety organization lies with its employees and citizens. It his goal to continue promoting the support of the community through good fire and life safety education, and training our personnel to the highest standards available. “We are a great department, our goal is to be an excellent department.” We hire the best people to become the best firefighters, we equip them with latest in technology, we train them to excel at whatever they attempt, so that the citizens of Lockwood can be proud.
